My Philosophy of Treatment
I work from a psychodynamic perspective, which entails talk therapy, a safe place for self-reflection and exploration. A desired outcome would be allowing unconscious material to be available to the client’s conscious mind. This entails some discussion of the client’s earliest memories of relationships and events. However, I see myself as able to recognize all theories as colors of the rainbow. Often I find it beneficial to borrow from all the colors. For instance, when working with addicts as well as adolescents, I often use cognitive behavioral therapy, which can provide help in teaching them how to recognize the events, thoughts, and feelings that lead to self-destructive behavior and give them the tools to change that behavior.
I will teach you communication skills, assertiveness skills, listening skills, anger managements and coping skills (i.e. self-soothing techniques), which will enable you to substitute the self-destructive behavior with empowering constructive behavior which builds self-esteem, self confidence and self worth.
My style of psychotherapy and counseling incorporates active, compassionate and empathetic listening in a safe, non-judgmental environment. I feel strongly that establishing and building trust with my client is a vital part of the therapy relationship.
Confidentiality is essential in the work that we do together. Confidentiality is particularly vital in the work that I do with couples counseling and relationship/ family counseling. It must be respected at all times and clear boundaries are set from the onset of treatment.
In my clinical experience, I find that therapy works best when you are open to it and are willing to participate in your own healing. Being receptive to therapy is a gift!
